Chamonix Situated at 1,035 metres above sea level at the foot on Mont Blanc, this resort town in eastern France hosted the 1924 Winter Olympics. It is known for its spectacular cable car ride up to Aiguille du Midi (3842 m above sea level) where one can have a close-up view of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps when the weather permits.
